The Northwest Credit Union Association’s Washington Government Affairs Conference (WGAC) concluded last Friday after nearly two full days of lobby training, legislative updates and Hill visits. According to estimates, approximately 100 people attended the annual event that drew participation from high ranking state representatives, senators and a would-be governor.
“It’s great that Attorney General Rob McKenna was able to reunite with the credit union community,” said Northwest Credit Union Association (NWCUA) CEO John Annaloro. “McKenna has been a friend of credit unions for years; helping Washington state be one of just two states with a data breach bill. We have worked together on crimes against financial institutions, elder financial abuse and data security. Our relationship is excellent.”
In addition to Washington gubernatorial candidate McKenna, special guests during Thursday’s Leadership Update included Sen. Steve Hobbs (D-44), Sen. Mike Hewitt (R-16), and Rep. Jim Moeller (D-49.)
Following a legislative update and advocacy training, attendees were shuttled to Capitol Hill, where they lobbied their elected representation on issues important to Washington credit unions.
“During the short, two-month-long session credit unions are focused on increasing to $250,000 the amount that a public entity can deposit at a credit union,” said NWCUA Vice President of Legislative Affairs Mark Minickiello. “There are other proposals that we are keeping a keen eye on, but making sure our public funds bill passes the Senate is our No. 1 priority in Washington right now.”
Prior to St. Valentine’s Day, Senate Bill 5913, which would allow federal credit unions to accept public funds from state entities and increase the permissible deposit of all state public funds with credit unions to the insurance limit of $250,000, must be pulled from the Senate Rules Committee and come to a vote before the full Senate to move forward. This could happen at any time. Check the NWCUA homepage this week for updates.
The WGAC concluded Friday morning with the annual Anchor Awards Breakfast, where the Washington credit union community honors elected leaders who have shown significant support for credit unions. The 2012 winners included freshman Republican Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler from Washington’s 3rd District, as well as State Sens. Tracey Eide, D-30, and Derek Kilmer, D-26.
