Oregon Political Update

Interim Legislative Committees
Interim committee appointments have been announced with a few changes for legislators. The Joint Emergency Board Committee has been added, as well as the House Higher Education Committee, which was previously a sub-committee under the House Education Committee. Rep. Tina Kotek (D-North Portland) has replaced Rep. Dave Hunt (D-Clackamas County) as co-chair of the House Rules Committee. Hunt will now co-chair the Transportation and Economic Development Committee, replacing Rep. Terry Beyer (R-Springfield) who will now sit on the Rules Committee. Other changes to the House Rules Committee include the removal of Rep. Chris Garrett (D-Lake Oswego) and Rep. Matt Wingard (R-Wilsonville) and the addition of Rep. Sal Esquivel (R-Medford). Rep. Tobias Read (D-Beaverton) has also replaced Rep. Kotek on the Joint Ways and Means Committee. Interim committees are scheduled to meet three times before the 2012 session convenes February 1st. Meetings are planned during Legislative Days September 21-23, November 16-18 and January 18-20. Here are the major committees that credit unions follow:

Oregon State Economist
Long time Oregon State Economist, Tom Potowski, will be leaving his position to return to Portland State University as chair of the Economics Department. Potowski’s primary responsibility as State Economist was developing the quarterly state economic and demographic forecasts that are used in determining Oregon’s general fund revenue for the Legislature. Mark McMullen, the Senior Economist with the Office of Economic Analysis, will step in as interim State Economist while the state begins recruiting for the position.

Portland Mayor Update
Portland Mayor Sam Adams has announced he will not seek re-election in 2012. Eileen Brady, co-founder of New Seasons, and Charlie Hales, a former Portland City Commissioner, have been the only ones to announce their candidacy for Portland Mayor so far.
