Where the Rubber Hits the Road: Credit Union Charity Ride Revs Up Again

The excitement is growing for the annual Credit Union Charity Ride, where credit union professionals and other enthusiasts team up to ride their Harley Davidson, Gold Wing, and Truimph motorcycles to benefit Doernbecher Children’s Hospital in Portland, Ore.

With a regular turnout of more than 150 riders, the sixth annual poker run begins in Woodland, Wash., on the morning of Saturday, Aug. 20. The route will meander past Johntson Ridge, Mt. St. Helens, and the Hoffstadt Bluffs before finishing at Fibre Federal Credit Union’s headquarters in Longview, Wash.

Part of Oregon Health Sciences University (OHSU), Doernbecher offers children the newest healing treatments available, while working towards developing tomorrow’s cures. For this reason it is recognized as one of the nation’s best children’s hospitals.

According to iQ Credit Union President & CEO Roger Michaelis, credit unions have had an ongoing relationship with Doernbecher for 20 years through Credit Union for Kids. In fact, the hospital’s seventh floor is the Credit Union for Kids Floor and is supported by the Charity Ride.

“All of us participating in the Credit Union Charity Ride see it as a fun, but very serious responsibility,” Michaelis says. “Sick kids are people who haven’t had a chance at life yet. It’s not their fault and it’s not fair. As a society, we need to be doing everything we can to help them.”

And he’s not alone in his feelings.

Larry Hoff, President & CEO of Fibre Federal Credit Union, the rides finishing point in Longview and the person who Michaelis credits for generating the Charity Ride idea, emphatically agrees.

“The kids and families this ride supports absolutely need these resources,” Hoff says. “I have a healthy, 22 year-old son with 10 fingers and 10 toes. We are fortunate, but not everyone is. When you look a sick child in the eyes, all you want to do is help.”

The first year of the Credit Union Charity Ride for Doernbecher Hospital was in 2006 and presented by iQ Credit Union and Fibre Federal Credit Union. It saw a few dozen riders, had 16 sponsors and raised $16,000. With about 150 riders attending in 2010, the event has steadily increased in popularity. More than $40,000 was raised last year, which brought the five year total to more than $200,000.

2011 looks to be bigger and better than ever.
