Unitus CCU Announces 2011 Scholarship Recipients

Unitus Community Credit Union, Portland Ore., continues its tradition of helping members achieve a higher education by providing scholarships to 11 students. This year, Unitus has awarded scholarships to graduating high school, undergraduate and graduate students. Each scholarship winner will receive $1,000 toward his or her tuition for the 2011-2012 academic year.

Unitus’ 2011 scholarship recipients are as follows: William Purtzer, Gabrielle Kelly, Haley Flannery, Jillian Espinosa, Mayra Newingham, Andrew Summers, Alexandria Johnson, Nancy Harbour, Sylvia Dost, Kara Kerpan and Brandon Kishpaugh.

As Oregon Live reported, Flannery will study anthropology this fall at Lewis & Clark College, while Summers, of Beaverton, studies biology at Portland Community College and hopes to transfer to Portland State University or Oregon Health Sciences University to pursue a career in pediatrics or oncology.

These types of scholarships and awards are often used by credit unions and are indicative of their important role within the communities. In just the past few months, Yakima Valley Credit Union has given out similar scholarships, while Verity Credit Union in Seattle awarded $6,000 to a family to find a cure for their six-year-old daughter’s rare disease. Numerica Credit Union in Spokane donated over 30 computers to a local low-income community center for job training.
