New Interchange Push Needed as Senate Schedules Vote

Credit unions are being asked to step up their outreach to their U.S. senators on the debit interchange issue after the Senate leaders scheduled a vote on delaying the Durbin Amendment after next week’s Congressional recess.

“We need everyone to get ready for the final push on interchange,” said Association CEO John Annaloro. “That means more contacts with the Northwest Congressional delegation and attending local town halls to ensure our concerns are heard.”

“We have made so much progress on this issue in the past few weeks. We need to see it through,” he added.

No formal date was set by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) for a vote on Senator Jon Tester’s (D-MT) bill, S. 575, which would delay implementation of the Durbin Amendment by 15 months.

All four Oregon and Washington senators are seen as crucial to this vote. The Senate is in recess next week, and the senators will be holding town-hall meetings across the area. Below is a list of announced meetings. Please consider attending and speaking in support of S. 575.

Credit unions can use the toll-free number (1-877-422-3525), the CapWiz website or senators’ Facebook pages to urge them to support the legislation.

These contacts will add to the other 350,000 contacts on this issue by credit unions since March 15, and sway senators to support Senator Tester’s bill.
