Jim McCarthy to Lead Northwest Resource FCU
Jim McCarthy has been named President & CEO of Northwest Resource Federal Credit Union, following his appointment by the Board of Directors. He assumed his new position on April 4, 2011 and is the fifth CEO in Northwest Resource’s 76-year history.

“We are very excited to welcome Jim as our new CEO and as a member of the Northwest Resource team,” said the credit union’s chair, Richard Conner. “Jim brings to us a host of key skills to lead our organization in the continued effort to offer the highest level of quality financial services available.”

McCarthy has over 13 years of experience with TwinStar Credit Union in Olympia, Wash., where he served as VP of Strategic Planning for the past eight years, overseeing asset liability management, new program development, mergers, MCIF, and the annual strategic business plan. Columbia CU VP Baker Named Community Housing Resource Center Volunteer of the Year
Columbia Credit Union Vice President Pam Baker was named 2011 Volunteer of the Year by the Community Housing Resource Center (CHRC) for her long-term dedication to the agency.

“Our staff and Board of Directors are delighted to publicly recognize Pam’s extraordinary leadership, long-term dedication and many valuable contributions over the years to benefit the Center and our clients,” said CHRC Executive Director Teri Duffy. “Selecting Pam as our Volunteer of the Year was an easy choice.”

Baker, who is celebrating her 44-year mortgage career anniversary in June, has served as Columbia’s VP of Home Loans for nearly five years. During this time, she has volunteered for the Center’s fundraising, program and development, and personnel committee efforts.

“In today’s ever changing mortgage world, financial education and counseling services for families are paramount,” said Baker. “CHRC provides all of the necessary services to help with financial security, housing stability, and homeownership to anyone who needs or wants advice.”

Established in 1996, CHRC provides quality education and counseling services to increase opportunities and access to community resources for those striving for financial security, housing stability or homeownership. Today, the Center is the only HUD-approved housing counseling agency in SW Washington serving over 3,100 local clients in the Portland/Vancouver area in 2010.

Verity CU Awards Grant To Find Cure for 6-Year-Old’s Disease
A local couple won $6,000 in a contest sponsored by Verity Credit Union to help find a cure for their six-year-old daughter’s rare disease.

They were awarded $1,000 for themselves and $5,000 to go to Cure JM Foundation, which provides help for patients’ families and supports research into the disease, known as juvenile dermatomyositis, a rare autoimmune disease that affects a child’s muscles and skin.

Julie and Justyn Shevlin said they are on a mission to raise money and educate other families about the disease, which has stricken their daughter Tessa. Little is known about JM or how it affects kids as they grow up. The Shevlins went through numerous doctors before Tessa was diagnosed almost two years ago.
