Advocacy

The Association works with Oregon, Washington and federal policy makers, regulators, coalitions and consumer groups to keep credit union powers strong, and give credit unions the opportunity to thrive. Northwest consumers have the best access to credit unions in the nation because of our unsurpassed operating environment. The Association’s advocacy efforts fall into two areas: Legislative Affairs and Regulatory Advocacy.

Legislative Affairs

The Association’s Legislative Affairs team seeks to protect credit unions from unnecessary and burdensome laws, while persuading lawmakers to pass laws beneficial to credit unions and the members they serve. The Association ensures that legislators understand the difference between credit unions and other types of financial institutions, actively seeks to engage members in grassroots advocacy, and raises and distributes funds through two political action committees.

Regulatory Affairs

The Association’s Regulatory Advocacy team works with Oregon, Washington, and federal regulators to advocate the promulgation of rules that strike a fair balance between consumer interests and the compliance burden placed on credit unions. The Association also actively encourages its members to participate in the regulatory process in order to better ensure the development and implementation of reasonable regulations.
